In this electronic age we don't need to travel to club meetings to watch movies and discuss them with a group. Hmmm.
For me this sounds like the paperless office ... a nice idea that never quite happens. In both cases it is because there is something valuable in the status quo. We like paper for some letters and records in the office. We enjoy meeting our friends at conventions and clubs. But we can broaden our experience of movies and communities of moviemakers through the internet.
NordFilmNet is a little gem of a website. Its cinema shows some fascinating movies - ranging from award winners to experiments in using pieces of equipment. Its forums deal with film-related ideas of all kinds. For an English-speaker it feels a bit strange at first because the base languages used by the guys who run it are Danish and Norwegian. Click the Union Jack (British flag) for the English version. Even in the depths of their forums there is usually a translation into English. In the odd case where that has not happened yet I use the wonderful Google translation service to read the messages.
It is a great idea. You need to register (free) to make the most of it. If you like it you can volunteer a donation. They look forward to hearing from some North American moviemakers. Oh - for Willibald and those of you who are at home in the German language, that is one of their options too and for Scandinavian Americans it is perfect.
They have had a couple of intriguing contests. One was to make a promo film. If that isn't a challenge an American could have met, I don't know what is. America is the pioneer of advertising ideas. We all see a torrent of commercial messages - good and bad - daily. As film makers it's always a challenge to fit a message into a very short piece of film. But the winner was from Luxemburg!
