ANOTHER STORY
- she collects men
by Charles F Connors |
A woman's hand is an the control of a slide projector, viewing Kodachrome
Transparencies. The projector is genuine Eastman Kodak. She is looking at
pictures of past boy friends, mostly body-builder types, but not all. She
views part of a movie of a boyfriend fishing in Canada. The movie projector
is also a genuine Eastman Kodak.
The movie progresses to her current boyfriend being thrown out, clothes and
all. He wanders the streets of Manhattan. He is out of money, orders a cup
of coffee but is unable to pay for it. The vendor lets him have it free,
but, as he leaves, someone knocks it out of his hand!
This woman collects men!
She progresses on to others. There is a series of pictures of men, as well
as video excerpts.
She finds a younger man, and we see them on Union Square, New York City,
walking past the original guitar player. They toss some cash into his basket.
We see them in a park as a rain storm is about to start.
The video ends as we see her looking out from her balcony, and we see the
face of a potential lover, but we get the impression she may have met her
match.
Inspirations
The inspiration for a movie within a movie comes from the film Sunset
Boulevard (1950). I saw it when I was six or seven years old, and
you can't imagine the effect of a movie starting off with a body floating
in a swimming pool, and the candle lit night-time funeral of a pet chimp,
on a seven year old! In that film there is a moment in which the 1950 Gloria
Swanson views a 1929 Gloria Swanson, in Joseph Kennedy's silent film
Queen Kelly.)
Another source of inspiration was The Scarlet Empress (1934)
with Marlene Dietrich. Actually, I found out later that the set designer
for both was Hans Drier, an emigré from Germany.
This is a Music Video, and the source of the music was the guitar player,
Ilan Lisman. Actors were provided by the New York Film Academy, Union
Square, New York.
New York City is a great place to do films.
There is always something going on.
Union Square is especially good. The individual whose face closes the video,
was on Union Square and said he was doing a survey. I said to him that I
would answer the questions of his survey, if I could film him as he asked
the questions, and I answered.
The blue light with smoke beneath it, was an LED Flashlight attached to the
faucett of the kitchen sink. The short clip of the guitar player getting
some money was some old Finnish currency dropped into a box on the kitchen
floor.
Editing was done using an I-Mac computer on the dining room table.
