Sprint horse racing is quite a sport
here in West Texas. A few months ago I got a call from a man who shot races,
but needed someone to edit the videos and produce a DVD of all the races.
These races are run every other Sunday, and he sells the DVDs to the horse
owners. He gives me the tape on Monday, and I give him 20 or so DVDs on Friday.
There usually are 19 to 24 races. He uses 2 cameras on the shoot - one at
the starting gate, and one at the finish line. The horses parade in front
of the spectators for 2 - 5 minutes, go to the gates and run the race. Usually
there are two horses in each race. The races are generally 200 to 350 yards
in length - although one this week was 50 yards and another a few weeks ago
was 1 mile in length. |
The videographer started with very limited experience. As we have worked
together over the past few months, I have given him suggestions and comments
about his shooting. It has been quite satisfying to watch him grow and expand
his abilities. The shooters are brothers, and now are starting to look for
other types of video work - mostly event types of shoots. While talking with
them about their compositions and shots, I often think back to when I started,
when Ned and Alberto mentored me on my compositions and shots. (They still
do!) I'm now passing on my knowledge and expertise to a next generation of
videographers. This is how things should be.
Enjoy the spring, get some great shots to go with that script you developed during the cold days of winter, and then submit your masterpiece to the AMPS festival in the Fall. Richard Swain (AMPS President) |
